Hurricane Irene

On August 28, 2011 Hurricane Irene's path swept along the mid-Atlantic coastline posing impact and danger to millions of people

Irene was referred to as a "once-in-50-year" hurricane for the Northeast from the standpoint of power outages caused by downed trees alone. It spread destructive winds (gusts between 60 to 90 mph) causing lengthy power outages and structural damage to buildings and roofs of homes.

Flying debris and falling trees heightened the danger for more structural damage and bodily harm. Downed trees and power lines littered roads and driveways, making them impassable until cleanup crews arrive.

The Joyce Kilmer American legion Post #25 was one of those buildings that suffered devastation from flooding.
